Labour nominates new LGA chair

Cllr Shaun Davies, LGA Senior Vice-Chair and Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, is set to become the LGA’s next chair, following May’s local elections.

Labour emerged from the elections as the largest party in local government, giving it the right to nominate the new chair, who will be elected at the LGA’s General Assembly in July and succeed current Chairman Cllr James Jamieson.

An LGA spokesperson said: “The LGA is a cross-party organisation with Labour now being the largest group.

“The LGA Labour Group has now completed its election process and has confirmed that Cllr Davies is their nominee to become the next chair of the organisation.

“Cllr Davies will be officially elected at our General Assembly meeting on 4 July just before the beginning of our annual conference in Bournemouth.”

Cllr Davies, currently Leader of the LGA’s Labour Group, is the first Labour Chair of the LGA since 2014, and also the youngest.

He told first: “I’m looking forward to building on the foundations left by current LGA Chairman Cllr James Jamieson, and working with colleagues from across the political spectrum to provide a strong and distinctive voice for local government.”

The LGA’s political balance is now: Labour 38.65 per cent; Conservative 33.75 per cent; Liberal Democrat 14.96 per cent; Independent/Other 12.64 per cent.

Its policy-making boards and political structures will be reconstituted over the summer to reflect the new political balance.
