As Aldershot is the historic home of the British Army, and Farnborough the birthplace of British aviation, hosting the prestigious Armed Forces Day National Event was a perfect union.
The identity of our towns and the Armed Forces community have been entwined since the British Army chose Aldershot as its base in 1854, and they remain home to thousands of serving personnel and veterans, as well as innovative defence businesses.
Working with local MP Alex Baker (Lab, Aldershot), we could not have been prouder to win the bid to celebrate our heritage, but also to highlight the important role of the Armed Forces and our continuing role in the nation’s defence.
From the outset, our objectives were to celebrate and thank our serving personnel and veterans, to promote the role of the cadet forces, which are so important to our future, and to inspire young people to consider a career in the Armed Forces.
Hosting the national event was also a fantastic opportunity to showcase Aldershot and Farnborough, and to shine a spotlight on our important defence businesses. Many became valued sponsors, and showcased exciting innovations to inspire and attract young people to consider a career in defence technology.
Throughout our planning, we worked closely with our Armed Forces partners, the Ministry of Defence, businesses, sponsors and community groups to deliver a successful, free, two-day, family-friendly occasion for everyone.
Saturday’s event was a spectacular celebration, including a tri-service parade and aerial displays that thrilled the crowds. Sunday’s Community Day included heritage activities, sports sessions and a poignant Drumhead Service.
Following the weekend, we were inundated with hundreds of messages from local people, and others around the country, saying how much they had enjoyed this latest chapter of Aldershot and Farnborough’s military story.
