In my first first article as LGA Labour Group Leader, and on behalf of the Labour local government family, I warmly welcome the new Prime Minister and Cabinet.
I know colleagues across the sector are looking forward to working again with Angela Rayner MP as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, and Jim McMahon MP as Minister for Local Government.
Councils understand their places. We know where investment is needed, where public services are under pressure and where local partnerships can make a transformative difference to the lives of residents.
“This is about putting the needs of residents first”
We welcome the Prime Minister’s key priorities, including a focus on transforming social care, stimulating regional economic growth and restoring vital local services.
For those of us working in our communities every day, this is about putting the needs of residents first and rebuilding the essential foundations in every region.
Following a group election, I am also delighted to confirm that Cllr Arooj Shah will join Cllr Bella Sankey as joint Deputy Leader of the group. Cllr Shah brings a wealth of experience from her time as Leader of Oldham Council.
With our new leadership team in place, the LGA Labour Group stands ready to work with the PM and his Cabinet, as genuine delivery partners, to achieve ambitious devolution, bring communities together, and ensure local services work for everyone.
